The name Swiss Army Knife may be familiar to anyone anywhere where in the world, but not the names of Victorinox and Wenger rang a bell for anyone? Probably not. The name of the Swiss Army knife, contrary to popular belief, not a brand name. Rather, the name given to a particular style of knife. The existing brands are Victorinox and Wenger. It may seem strange that two companies have the same knife, but the explanation is quite simple.
The original manufacturer of the knife for the Swiss Army is a society based by Karl Elsener in 1891. I do not know the original name, the company Victoria in 1909 was renamed in honor of his mother, who had just died. The company started using stainless steel for the knife in 1921. The combination of Victoria and a short way from the French word for steel Steel (stainless steel), the company was changed to Victorinox.
Victorinox is the best seller of Army knife Switzerland (Offiziersmesser known at the time) until about 1893 when another company, Paul Boechat & Cie (later renamed Wenger) started sell a knife similar to Offiziersmesser. (Offiziersmesser is the official German knife.)
In 1908 the Swiss government to divide the market Swiss Army between the two companies. Many believe that this was to promote competition, reduce prices. Through an agreement between two companies, Victorinox knife marks its "Swiss Army knife", and Wenger will mark "the genuine Swiss Army knife of the army."
In 2005, Victorinox acquired Wenger, once again, becoming the only supplier of Swiss Army knives. Victorinox plans to continue to produce the two brands of knives, to continue use two different slogans.
Wenger in 2006, has produced a new knife Swiss Army, the giant to celebrate 100 years of production in the Swiss Army knife. The Giant has 85 devices and 110 functions. The retail giant to $ 1,200 in some stores. Many other companies produce knives like the Swiss army knife: however, the red for several knives function, Cross-and-shield emblem and the words SWISS Army are registered trademarks of Victorinox AG and its affiliated companies.
